A cromorne occurs as musical instrument of the woodwind family. It was popular in the Renaissance period. In the 20th century, there was the revival of interest around Early Music and people began to play cromorne over again.

A title derives from either a German krumhorn (or crumhorn or krumphorn) meaning bent horn. This relates to the old English crump meaning curve, surviving in modern English in 'crumpled' & 'english muffin' (the curving cake).

A cromorne occurs as capped reed instrument. Its construction is similar thereto of the melody pipe of the bagpipes. The double reed is mounted inside the chamber at one prevent of an extended pipe. Blowing into the chamber produces a tone. A pitch of a note may be varied by opening or even closing finger holes along the length of the pipe. a single unusual feature of a cromorne is its shape; the prevent is bent upwards around a curve, and so that the instrument resembles a banana, or even thomas more unimaginatively, the letter J.

Cromorne healthy nothing rather the trumpet, something like an oboe, and nothing prefer the duck. It produce the heavy droning healthy. It have a limited range, commonly an octave and one note; when these are theoretically conceivable for a reed to overblow a twelfth above a fundamental note, this is practically pleasantly hard, since the reed is non held inside the mouth, and so in practice a lot swimming is confined to the fundamental series. A select few big instruments use their range extended down by means of extra holes & sliders or even by dropping a pressure. Because of the limited range, music for cromorne is commonly played by the class action of instruments of different sizes & hence at different pitches. Such the class action is referred to as the consort of cromorne.
